Welcome to Arrest Stories. A twenty-seven-year-old Colorado Springs woman stands accused of fatally stabbing her Uber driver and dumping his body in a remote field before stealing his vehicle. Here's what may have happened.
According to official reports, Khayla Dawson ordered an Uber ride on Monday and was picked up by driver Jeremy Campbell. What began as a routine rideshare trip would end in tragedy near Eastonville Road and Hodgen Road in El Paso County.
Deputies say Dawson's story changed multiple times during questioning. She initially told detectives, "I was going to call another Uber to pick me up once I was dropped off," claiming she planned to visit a friend. Later, she admitted she actually "wanted to go for a joy ride and get some air" and simply "wanted to get out of the house."
The most disturbing details emerged when Dawson described the alleged attack. She told investigators, "I fell asleep in the back of the car and woke up to the driver trying to touch me, which is when I pulled out a knife." She continued, "He then pulled out a knife, too, before I stabbed him in the neck, and in the struggle that followed, he drove the car through a fence into a field with horses."
Deputies located Campbell's body in a field near the Woodlake trailhead after an extensive ground and air search. They found his vehicle on Spectrum Loop in Colorado Springs, where evidence suggested a crime had occurred.
Investigators discovered crucial evidence at Dawson's residence. Her butcher block was missing its largest knife, while deputies found "an approximate eighteen-inch blade machete-type knife" hidden behind a cabinet in her living room.
Dawson ultimately confessed to authorities, stating, "He took me to an address on Eastonville Road, where I stabbed and killed him, left him there and then took the car back to my apartment."
She faces charges including first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, and tampering with physical evidence. Dawson is being held without bond.
