Welcome to Arrest Stories. A sixty-two-year-old two-time prison escapee currently incarcerated in Alabama has been charged in connection with the nineteen ninety-six kidnapping and murder of seven-year-old Morgan Violi in Kentucky. Here's what may have happened.
On July twenty-fourth, nineteen ninety-six, Morgan Violi was playing with her six-year-old friend at the Colony Apartments in Bowling Green, Kentucky when a maroon van pulled up to the apartment complex parking lot. Witnesses reported seeing a man in an older-model maroon Chevrolet van attempt to grab the other girl first before seizing Morgan. The adult witness described watching as the man put Morgan in the van and sped off.
Robert Scott Froberg had escaped from an Alabama prison in April nineteen ninety-six by climbing a rain spout to the roof and using a cable to climb down to the ground. While on the run, Froberg stole an elderly woman's car and traveled to Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania. On May twentieth, nineteen ninety-six, Froberg was reported to have been in a children's tree house making contact with a seven-year-old boy in Mount Carmel. The boy ran home and told his parents, who called police. Officers encountered Froberg and he fled before being arrested and jailed in the Northumberland County Jail.
Authorities say Froberg later escaped from the Pennsylvania facility and traveled south, allegedly stealing the maroon van from Dayton, Ohio. Prosecutors said he reportedly stopped in Bowling Green to get drugs when Morgan's kidnapping occurred.
Three months after her abduction, Morgan's body was found in the woods near a barn in Tennessee. The case remained unsolved for nearly three decades until more sophisticated DNA testing became available.
On February twenty-fourth, twenty twenty-six, FBI and Bowling Green Police Department detectives interviewed Froberg at his current location in Montgomery, Alabama where he is serving time on unrelated charges. Prosecutors said Froberg admitted he ultimately caused Morgan's death in that van, stating the seven-year-old fought back and screamed.
