Welcome to Arrest Stories. An off-duty Hanover police officer has been arrested and charged with motor vehicle homicide in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Brockton, Massachusetts. Here's what may have happened.
On February seventeenth, twenty twenty-six, Massachusetts State Police arrested thirty-six-year-old Thomas Hayes, an off-duty Hanover police officer, in connection with a deadly hit-and-run incident. The investigation began early Monday morning around twelve thirty a.m. when Brockton police received reports of an unresponsive man found in a snowbank near Battle and Cross streets.
The twenty-three-year-old victim, Alfredo Alves, was discovered by a passerby and taken to Boston Medical Center South, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators found marks in the snow that led them to believe Alves had been struck by a vehicle. The victim sustained multiple injuries including a fractured skull.
A crucial break in the case came when a witness went to the Brockton Police Department hours after the crash. This witness, who had been riding as a passenger in Hayes' vehicle during the incident, identified Hayes as the driver. The vehicle involved was described as a twenty twenty-two Ford Explorer that sustained a shattered windshield and other damage from the collision.
Hayes allegedly fled the scene after striking the pedestrian. Following his arrest, Hayes was placed on administrative leave from the Hanover Police Department. He was released on fifteen thousand dollars bail.
The Hanover Police Department released a statement saying, "First and foremost, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. Any loss of life is a profound tragedy, and our thoughts are with all those affected." The department added, "We hold our officers to the highest standards of conduct, both on and off duty. Accountability and transparency are essential to maintaining the public's trust."
