Welcome to Arrest Stories. A twenty-eight-year-old Omaha man was arrested after a five-year-old boy accidentally shot himself with an unsecured firearm. Here's what may have happened.
On a Sunday afternoon in Omaha, Nebraska, officers responded to a hospital shortly after three p.m. for a child with a gunshot wound. The shooting occurred in the area of Fourteenth and Fort streets, where officers determined the victim was injured after handling an unsecured firearm.
According to police reports, Trae Colvin came home from work and placed a gun he had in his car into the pocket of his sweatpants. Colvin then fell asleep on his bed with a five-year-old and seven-month-old children lying next to him. Police say Colvin believes the gun fell out of his pocket while he slept.
The five-year-old boy got hold of the unsecured firearm and accidentally shot himself. Colvin told investigators he didn't hear the gunshot but said it must have woken him up. When he awoke, Colvin saw the five-year-old flailing his arm and blood getting everywhere. The child's mother, who was working at the time of the incident, later said when I first saw him, my heart shattered. I could tell he was hurting, but he was trying to be brave boy.
After discovering the injured child, Colvin stored the gun in a safe before leaving with the children. He drove to Council Bluffs to pick up the children's mother, then they continued to the hospital. The boy's injuries are reported as not life-threatening.
Police arrested Colvin along with four other individuals: Gabriella Gutierrez, Arturo Bazan-Perez, Dulce Bazan Castillo, and Carlos Bazan-Hernandez. Colvin is being held on ten percent of a five hundred thousand dollar bond.
Officers determined the victim was injured after handling an unsecured firearm that was found in a bedroom where the children had access.
