Welcome to Arrest Stories. A thirty-one-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder after police say he shot and killed his mother and stepfather at their shared home in Powder Springs, Georgia. Here's what may have happened.
On December seventh, two thousand twenty-four, officers with the Powder Springs Police Department responded to a call at approximately twelve thirty in the afternoon. The call brought them to a residence in the fifty-three hundred block of Yoshino Terrace, where they would discover a domestic incident that had turned deadly.
Inside the home, officers found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims were seventy-two-year-old Monica Brookins and seventy-three-year-old John Wells. Both were immediately transported to a local hospital in critical condition, but despite medical efforts, both victims later died from their injuries.
Martin Duberry was arrested at the scene and taken into custody at the residence. Police have identified Duberry as the stepson of the victims, and all three individuals lived together in the same Yoshino Terrace home where the shooting occurred.
The shooting took place on Saturday afternoon inside their shared residence. Evidence of the violence was visible from outside the home, with a bullet hole piercing the glass next to the front door. According to police reports, Duberry had called nine-one-one to report the shooting attack himself.
One neighbor described witnessing the arrest, stating, "I just looked out my window, and I saw a man coming his house with his hands up, and then officers had their guns drawn."
The victims were remembered fondly by neighbors. One resident said, "They was always super nice, always waving to you, always saying hi to you. They stopped and talked and they was just good people. I mean, they was just good neighbors."
Martin Duberry faces multiple charges including two counts of murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and eight counts of aggravated battery. He is currently being held without bond. Police have classified this incident as domestic in nature.
