Welcome to Arrest Stories. A twenty-nine-year-old man was arrested in southwest Miami-Dade after allegedly stealing four hundred pounds of avocados from a commercial grove. Heres what may have happened.
Early Monday morning around two thirty a.m., Miami-Dade deputies were patrolling an agricultural area in Redland when they noticed a man dressed in dark clothing inside a commercial avocado grove. The man, later identified as Edel Perez, was actively picking avocados from trees on property owned by a farming company.
Deputies observed Perez wearing a black hoodie while picking avocados and loading them into a nearby vehicle. A black Mercedes Benz was parked along the roadway near the grove on Southwest Two Hundred Seventeenth Avenue and Three Hundred Twentieth Street.
Upon investigation, deputies discovered that Perez had cut through the fence line to gain access to the avocado grove. When they searched the Mercedes, they found multiple bags filled with freshly picked avocados inside the vehicle, with additional produce stored in the trunk. The trunk was completely loaded with loose avocados.
The total weight of the stolen avocados was approximately four hundred pounds with an estimated value of about eight hundred dollars. Perez had bags filled with avocados in his possession at the time of his arrest.
When questioned by officers, Perez explained his motivation for the theft. Perez told officers that he was stealing the avocados to sell them and to buy Christmas presents for his children.
Perez was arrested and charged with third-degree grand theft, trespassing on an agricultural site, and trespassing. His bond was set at five thousand dollars.
The incident occurred in the Redland area of southwest Miami-Dade, known for its agricultural operations and commercial farming.
