On the afternoon of February fourth, Yordan Basilio Diaz Vera, working as a Lyft driver, picked up a victim at her home to transport her to a medical appointment. According to police reports, instead of driving the woman to her doctor's appointment, Diaz Vera drove to a secluded parking lot area.
During the drive, Diaz Vera opened the glove compartment, revealing a gun inside to the victim. Police say Diaz Vera then pulled the car over, locked the doors to prevent the victim's escape, and got into the back seat with the woman. Authorities report that Diaz Vera pulled the gun on the victim and forced her to perform a sex act.
Diaz Vera, identified as a Cuban national, allegedly entered the United States illegally in November two thousand twenty-two. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has since placed a detainer on Diaz Vera, requesting local authorities notify ICE law enforcement before any potential release from jail.
The arrest was part of a broader ICE operation called Operation Lyft Off, which targeted illegal immigrant rideshare drivers. On January eighteenth, ICE arrested eighteen illegal alien rideshare drivers in Cape Canaveral, Florida. During this operation, authorities also arrested Reutilio Olvera-Contreras, a forty-six-year-old Mexican national who allegedly used false identification while driving passengers throughout Central Florida.
ICE officials stated that Diaz Vera was released into communities under the previous administration before allegedly committing this crime against a mother of four. They emphasized that the agency has lodged an arrest detainer requesting local authorities notify ICE instead of releasing the suspect into Louisville neighborhoods.
Diaz Vera's bond was set at one hundred thousand dollars cash for the charges of kidnapping, sodomy, and menacing.
