Welcome to Arrest Stories. A forty-seven-year-old Detroit hospital nurse stands accused of sexually assaulting multiple victims, including patients under his care, in a shocking abuse of trust that has rocked the medical community. Here's what may have happened.
Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, who worked as a nurse at Detroit Sinai-Grace Hospital, now faces a mounting list of sexual assault charges after prosecutors say he targeted vulnerable victims both inside and outside the hospital walls. The disturbing pattern of alleged crimes spans from December two thousand twenty-one through August of this year.
According to police reports, one of the most brazen incidents occurred on May ninth when Figueroa-Berrios allegedly forced himself into a porta-potty outside Grand Circus Park near forty-seven East Adams Street. The victim, who was intoxicated at six times the legal limit, became a key witness in prosecutors' case against the nurse.
The charges escalated dramatically when investigators uncovered allegations that Figueroa-Berrios sexually assaulted a patient while working at Sinai-Grace Hospital on August eighteenth. Prosecutors paint a chilling picture of a predator who "preys on vulnerable patients" including "drug addicts and people with mental illness."
Officials emphasize the calculated nature of these alleged crimes. "This man does have a modus operandi; he victimizes victims who are vulnerable, in vulnerable states who come seeking help in the hospital," prosecutors stated. "This man is preying on vulnerable victims who come in seeking help, and he knows how to pick victims and that's why he is so dangerous."
The case has expanded beyond Detroit, with Livonia Police Department requesting a warrant for an alleged sexual assault from December two thousand twenty-one. Figueroa-Berrios now faces multiple counts of third-degree and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.
During his court appearance, the judge set bond at one hundred thousand dollars and ordered Figueroa-Berrios to wear a GPS tether, declaring him "a threat to the community" who "needs to be nowhere near a hospital."
