HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYER ARRESTED HOURS AFTER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY

Welcome to Arrest Stories. An eighteen-year-old South Oak Cliff High School football player was arrested for allegedly shooting a teammate with a rifle just hours after their state championship victory in Dallas. Here's what may have happened.

On Saturday evening, December twentieth, the South Oak Cliff Golden Bears celebrated their UIL Class Five A Division Two state football championship after defeating their opponents thirty-five to nineteen. The celebration would take a tragic turn later that night at a residence in the sixty-four hundred block of Knoll Ridge Drive.

Around nine-thirty p.m., Xavier Mayfield was in an upstairs bathroom on the second floor getting ready to go to his bedroom. According to police reports, Mayfield was holding an AR fifteen rifle when a teammate called his name from a nearby bedroom. As Mayfield turned toward the direction of the teammate's call, the rifle discharged, striking the victim in the neck.

Prior to the shooting, teammates had been in a bedroom reviewing photos that were taken of the football game that had occurred earlier in the day. One witness was grabbing his clothes and walking out of the room to take a shower when he observed Mayfield swinging the rifle. The witness reported that Mayfield told him the weapon's safety was on.

Police documents state that Mayfield turned around towards where the victim was located and stated that right after he turned around, a single gunshot went off from the AR fifteen rifle that he was holding. Following the shooting, Mayfield attempted to help the wounded teammate down the stairs to transport him to a hospital. Witnesses at the home called nine-one-one once Mayfield and the victim reached the first floor.

Mayfield was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Bond was set at fifty thousand dollars. The shooting occurred just hours after what should have been one of the most memorable nights in South Oak Cliff football history.

All suspects presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Do not take this report as factual, always verify facts. Thanks for watching Arrest Stories.
